Also known as “composite fillings” due to the plastic glass mixture they are made from, white fillings are highly durable. What’s more, they are barely noticeable compared to silver fillings. This helps explain their popularity in recent times.
However, our clinicians can also carry out restorations made from porcelain. We may recommend these fillings when there is insufficient natural tooth structure to predictably support a white filling, but still enough that a crown does not have to be placed.

The typical longevity of white fillings is approximately seven to 15 years.
However, you will need to practise high standards of oral care to preserve the condition of your composite fillings. Their size and exact location, along with what you eat and drink, will also affect how long they last.
White fillings can turn yellow over time. This is due to the filling material absorbing pigments from certain foods and beverages, such as coffee, tea, and red wine. Tobacco use can also cause composite fillings to yellow.
To reduce these risks, you should regularly brush and floss your teeth, and limit your consumption of staining food and drinks.
It isn’t very common for white fillings to fall out, given how securely the composite resin bonds to the tooth structure.
However, there may be a greater risk of composite fillings falling out if decay develops around the filling, or if excessive pressure is placed on the filling due to biting down on sticky or hard foods.
Composite fillings do tend to be slightly less durable and less long-lasting than metal fillings. However, it is also easier to repair white fillings than metal ones.
White fillings may also become stained from contact with tea, coffee, red wine, or other foods and beverages known to stain the teeth.
